USPS responds to erroneous report that it hoards ammunition

ammunition

Postal plants are really government ‘hoarding’ centers for ammunition???. Don’t believe the hype.

USPS responds to report(s) that it is stocking up on ammunition. This subject matter has taken on a life of its own. Earlier this year USPS posted a notice on the Federal Business Opportunities website.  The notice simply said that  the “United States Postal Service intends to solicit proposals for assorted small arms ammunition.”

But right-wing news websites like Newsmax assumed USPS must be up to something sinister. Here is what they wrote:

Add the U.S. Postal Service to the list of federal agencies seeking to purchase what some Second Amendment activists say are alarmingly large quantities of ammunition.

Earlier this year, the USPS posted a notice on its website, under the heading “Assorted Small Arms Ammunition,” that says: “The United States Postal Service intends to solicit proposals for assorted small arms ammunition. If your organization wishes to participate, you must pre-register. This message is only a notification of our intent to solicit proposals.”

Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Washington-based Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, said: “We’re seeing a highly unusual amount of ammunition being bought by the federal agencies over a fairly short period of time. To be honest, I don’t understand why the federal government is buying so much at this time.”

Jake McGuigan, director of state affairs and government relations for the National Shooting Sports Foundation, said widely reported federal ammunition purchases have sparked conspiracy-type fears among gun owners, who worry that the federal government is trying to crack down on Second Amendment rights via the back door by limiting the ammo available to owners.

It’s not just the USPS that is stocking up on ammo.

Now granted that many people are unaware the law enforcement arm of USPS like special agents and Postal Inspectors carry guns and not flashlights. But to assume that USPS is plotting to infringe upon the American people’s Second Amendment rights is stretching it a wee-bit too much.
Here is the response from USPS:
U.S. Postal Service PR manager sets the record straight on4-15-14 Newsmax.com  article that USPS hoards ammunition.

The U.S. Postal Service is not hoarding ammunition. The Postal Service Inspection Service is a law enforcement agency and its Inspectors carry firearms. Periodically, the Inspection Service must purchase ammunition for activities like firearms training, required annual firing range qualifications and for duty. As the Postal Service’s primary law enforcement arm, the Inspection Service is a highly specialized, professional organization, which performs investigative and security functions essential to a stable and sound postal system and the security of the U.S. Mail. The Postal Inspection Service has a proud and successful record of fighting criminals who misuse postal services and products to defraud, endanger or otherwise threaten the American public.

  1. Amen Danny, those Ar 15 assault rifles are going for about half what they were. They need to spread more lies for more sales.

  2. Look at who the people were who commented on the original Newsmax website…………. NRA flunkies, gun nut spokesmen, Mouthpieces for the gun and ammo manufacturers………… Of course they want to scare the cr#p out of all the gun owners in the US. “Hey BIG GOVERNMENT just bought a billion rounds of ammo!! THEY ARE GOING TO COME AFTER YOU!! THERE IS GOING TO BE A GOVERNMENT MASSACRE OF ITS POPULATION!! BE AFRAID….BE VERY AFRAID…………. But MOST OF ALL — GO OUT AND BUY MORE GUNS AND AMMO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Remember the first time Obama was elected!! BIG headlines from the NRA. “Obama is going to STOP ALL AMMO SALES !!!” So all the gun owners went running out and cleaned out every gun shop, ammo dealer, Walmart, etc etc etc until they had a 6 month back order. Did Obama stop ammo sales? NO………. The ammo makers are still laughing over that one………………….

  3. What a crock ! If you call dog spray an ammunition then maybe – – but even that doubtful given all the dog bites any given year.

  4. Christ, how many of these “USPS PR Manager” and “USPS Spokesman” does this clown show have ?!?!
