USPS Seeking National Contract for Rental, Leasing of Minivans & Cargo Vans

According to USPS: Presently, there are not sufficient capital funds to purchase new equipment.

The U.S. Postal Service will solicit a National contract for the rental, leasing and lease with option to purchase of motor vehicles suitable for mail delivery. Lease terms will extend to a maximum of three (3) years.  The primary types of vehicles to be leased are minivans, cargo vans and high roof cargo vans( Mercedes Sprinter, Dodge Promaster, Ford Transit)  (Units must be EPACT (Energy Policy Act) compliant to the maximum extent practicable.  The vehicles are to be used in the carrier delivery operations.  Leases will be set up as closed-end leases.  When new vehicles are leased with the intention of purchase, the USPS will have the option to up fit them above the normal base vehicle by paying for the added up fits at lease inception.  The vehicle will then lease at the same lease rate as any other unit.  Vehicles rented/leased in excess of 90 days must be white in color in keeping with the USPS image.

Currently, there are no leased minivans or cargo vans in the fleet.  The base equipment must include a rubber mat that covers the entire floor area of the unit.  Cargo area must have lighting. The cargo area must be separated from the driver area by expanded wire mesh that will keep parcels from flying forward and hitting the operator or any passenger. Examples of the types of vehicles that will be required include:  Chevrolet City Express Van; Ford Transit Connect Van; Ford Transit Van flex fuel; Ford E150 Series Van4.6 FFV and Ford E250 and E350 Series Cargo Vans; Dodge Ram Promaster Cargo Van; Chevy Express cargo vans 1500 thru 3500 series; Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500 thru 3500 series.

Currently there is limited need for these types of vehicles.  As the USPS fleet ages we anticipate that the rental duration and number of leases will increase of the next few years as the vehicle fleet ages.  Presently, there are not sufficient capital funds to purchase new equipment.

  1. USPS has a budget where did all the money go?
Your travel fleet should Be # 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did you spend it for maintaining OUR HISTORIC POST OFFICE’S THAT ARE BEING SOLD OFF (due to neglect became a money pit)? NOT!

USPS IS NOT FOR PROFIT, YEARLY ALL MONEY ACCOUNTED FOR A BUDGET AND SPENT. ANY MONIES LEFT OVER GO TO A GENERAL FUND WHICH THE FEDERAL GO’VT TAKES…

WHERE HAS ALL THE MONEY GONE??? LONG TIME ASKING.

  2. So how much is the USPS gonna be paying for these things because we already know they like to pay way over the going price for things…ex…chair from staples catalog 150.00 but because they have or had an agreement they had to pay 300 for the same chair! True story….a rinky dink bldg that was like a chewed up log cabin…they paid 2,000 a month lease only one level and not big at all, some childrens treehouses are bigger and yet! $2,000 dollars! Yeah that’s Titusville NJ for y’all!

  3. Hey Darrell Issa……….see what your pre-funding for retiree’s health benefits decades into the future has done?? No funds left for necessary delivery vehicles…..modernize the fleet with nat gas or electric and the savings will multiply like a Congressman’s bank account after a few years in DC…………another thought, Congressional pay should be on a per diem basis…….if you aren’t in session, you get no pay!!……..

  4. If they lease, they will have to BUY EVERY VEHICLE AT THE END OF THE LEASE.Who comes up with this bs.LLV’s are getting out dated and CRV’s are are USPS/Ford joke. They were not designed by anyone who ever carried a bag.Someone should be fired just for coming up with this stupid idea.Talk about bleeding money.

  5. Leasing is NOT the way to go! Who the heck is in charge up there in Postal Land? Just the body damage alone will cost a fortune let alone the lease itself! If there is money to WASTE upper management will figure out a way to do it.

  6. The LLV’s are pieces of shit. The USPS could have saved millions if they’d just insisted when Grumman designed them to have the front and rear tires align properly, but that would have taken brains, apparently in short supply at the USPS and Grumman both. It sends a really pathetic message to see our competitors in new vehicles every couple of years while we have to drive these embarrassing tin boxes. I probably will retire before my office sees new vehicles. I have a little over three years to go. The LLV’s will really look like hell then and drive worse.

  7. It’s been mentioned time and again that the USPS should enter into a contract with ford to manufacture right hand drive, all electric versions of the ford transit connect. This vehicle has been on roads of Europe for about six years now. All they need to do is manufacture them in the usa following plans already in use overseas.

  8. Not enough $ for new, eh, USPS mgmt. scum ?

How many vehicles would the $ wasted on the LSS fiasco and your bonuses, buy ?
