USPS Spokesperson: Alabama no longer has holiday package backlog

12/31/2020 MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — The United States Postal Service says it hired a record number of seasonal employees to handle a record number of packages coming through this year.

Debra Fetterly, the USPS Spokesperson for the Alabama District, said in a statement, “We no longer have a backlog of holiday packages in the Alabama mail processing system. Sometimes updates to the package tracking system are delayed by two hours. USPS is looking into the matter.”

NBC 15 News spoke with Mobile Postmaster Paul Birge just before Christmas, and he asked for patience. He said the postal service is trying to get more transportation so they can get all types of mail to your door.

“With the surge of COVID throughout the country, we have seen some temporary employee shortages. And with the unprecedented volume, we have seen some capacity challenges with airlift and transportation, which are causing some delays. But that’s across the board in all of our shipping competitors as well,” Birge sai
