USPS staffing shortage causing mail, package delays in central Pennsylvania

12/9/2019 CARLISLE, Pa. (WHTM) — A staffing shortage at the United States Postal Service is causing mail and package delays in at least one part of central Pennsylvania.

The USPS acknowledged the problem to ABC27, saying it is struggling to hire enough workers in Cumberland County, and that is subsequently causing significant delays of package dropoffs and days without mail for some customers.

One family said that was their experience last week when they went three days without mail delivery.

“I’m a working mom of three, so I really rely on online shopping and my packages showing up on my doorstep,” said Elizabeth Kemmery, a West Pennsboro Township resident. “My husband noticed because our bills were sitting in the mailbox for a few days and he was waiting on some packages that weren’t coming.”

Kemmery says a call to their local post office revealed their route and three others were uncovered.

  1. The USPS has fought to reduce staffing and employee wages for years while adding wasteful management contractors and and corporate exec type pay for them. It is no surprise. Give the employees a raise of more than 1%.

  2. The USPS is a horrible place to work.
The pay is not in line with the amount of work.
The bosses are as lazy as they are dumb.
IT sucks. People talk and tell people to avoid it.
LAbor shortages will be a part of ongoing problems.
But we have TONS of managers that do nothing all
day and make TONS of money. Want to know why we
    are going under.

  3. Only gonna get worse. The word gets around about how
awful the PO is to work for. Thugs for stupidvisors and
    mismanagers. Impossible time constraints. Impossible
amounts of mail to deliver daily. UPS/Fedex paying more.
This stuff didn’t happen 25 years ago before all the wasted
money spent on automation. 25 years ago I could mail a
letter in Boston to Rhode Island in one day. Now it takes
three days. Talk about a service going bad. The end is coming.
The crapper is all warmed up.

  4. The results of treating your employees like sh#t, the problem with being able to hire and retain low life workers! How come management is treated with respect, while the workers are dumped on? Management should put down their donuts and start to think if at all possible. Remember when the Postal clerk laid on the floor in Oakland for twenty minutes before EMS was called? Or when in Cleveland nineteen employees were arrested by the Postal Inspectors for a crime that never happened?

    • Money is always directed where their hearts are. The workers who count
are always where the tire meets the road. Merry Chistmas.
