The Postal Service is delivering packages to customers seven days a week through Christmas in major cities and high-volume locations across the nation.

Sunday delivery began Nov. 23 to accommodate the surge in package deliveries fueled by the record growth in online shopping. Last Sunday alone, 3.2 million packages were delivered and the number is expected to rise through Christmas.

“Customers have told me that they are really glad to receive packages on Sunday,” said City Carrier Assistant Rufus Graham II. “Customers expect their orders to be delivered on Monday, and they have stated how nice it is to receive packages a day early.”

Baton Rouge, LA, Customer Services Supervisor Tommy Battaglia said, “You walk up to the door and their faces light up to see a package from grandma. With the volume that we get, it definitely benefits the customers on Sundays.”

West Chicago, IL, Customer Services Supervisor Larry Rodgers says he’s impressed by how well the sequence delivery program works for Sunday deliveries. Once the packages are scanned, the program sorts them into city and rural routes. It also prints turn-by-turn directions for each carrier.

The Postal Service expects to deliver between 450 million and 470 million packages this season, up roughly 12 percent from last year.
