PR reader note: May prompt VER offer for letter carriers and change of schedules for clerks. Without city and rural carriers delivering on their routes on Saturdays, clerk schedules will have to be adjusted. Mondays will really be heavy.
NAPS had received preliminary information from the Postal Service on a change of delivery from six to five days prior to an announcement by the Postmaster General expected today at 10:00 a.m.
Then, the Federal News Radio in Washington, D.C. reported this morning in a press release today (February 6, 2013):
“That The Postal Service intends to discontinue some Saturday service beginning Aug. 1. USPS will announce that it wants to cut Saturday delivery of first class mail. The Postal Service would continue to deliver priority mail, packages and medicine. USPS says that cutting Saturday delivery would save the service approximately $2 billion a year”.
Today, the resident officers of NAPS will be attending a meeting with the seven union and management organization leadership with the Postmaster General and his senior staff to be briefed on the expected changes. Details of the union/association briefing will be provided to our members as soon as the details are reviewed.

The U.S. Postal Service plans to stop delivering letters and other first-class mail on Saturdays beginning Aug. 1, although packages will continue to be delivered.
Tired of waiting for Congress to help, the Postal Service later Wednesday is expected to unveil a series of more drastic cuts they plan to pursue that will save them billions of dollars, a spokesperson for the service confirmed.
It’s unclear at the moment how the Postal Service has the authority to quit delivering letters on Saturdays. Previously, they’ve said they need Congress to change current law to do so.
