USPS to start Sunday delivery of Amazon packages this week throughout California

File photograph of Amazon.com packageThe U.S. Postal Service will start Sunday home deliveries this week throughout Northern California, thanks to a special deal with Amazon[Financial terms of the Amazon/USPS partnership have not been disclosed].

The online retailer, which has massive distribution centers in Patterson and Tracy, began testing Sunday deliveries in several big cities earlier this year.

Apparently Amazon liked the result, because it’s expanding the service to most of California. At least that’s what Postal Service spokesman Augustine Ruiz revealed Wednesday.

“We haven’t made any announcements yet, but stay tuned,” Amazon spokeswoman Ashley Robinson said. “We expect to roll out Sunday delivery to a large portion of the U.S. population this year.”

It won’t be regular postal workers making those deliveries.

Ruiz said the Postal Service has hired 157 new temporary employees to deliver those packages to customers from Fresno to the Oregon border.

That includes 98 city carrier assistants, 24 rural carrier assistants and 35 mail processing clerks who will help sort packages. And the hiring continues.

  1. the CCA’s are delivering more than just express mail on Sundays with the packages now…. at least the PTF’s got benefits right away- the CCA’s don’t….. regardless both of them should AT LEAST get time and 1/2! It’s all about the union money and the number of members we have or potential members…. that is Rolando’s main focus

  2. @ Carrier Chuck says: PTFs were and are only paid time and a 1/4 to deliver express mail on Sundays. The CCAs are receiving the same as PTFs!!

  3. the CCA’s were agreed to by Rolando before it ever got to arbitration…. he agreed to it because the PO said it would hire 30,000 of them…. more potential union members and more money in his pocket

  4. carrier chuck-Fred Rolando had nothing to do with the creation of CCA’s,it was imposed by the arbitrator in the contract award.

  5. Jimmy, still losing money because the post office has to pay for medical benefits and insurance 75 YEARS into the future by a congressional order. We are paying for benefits for workers that aren’t even born…. Not to mention everyone going green and getting e-statements or paying your bulls online….. The celebrities that keep pushing to “pay your credit card online so we can save billions of $ per year in postage costs”…. Who do you think eats that cost?

  6. the CCA’s only get time and a 1/4 on Sundays…. not even time and 1/2…. yet our carrier union agreed to this…. work them 7 days a week and little to no benefits…..yeah Fred- great job. Hope getting your pockets lined is worth it for you.

  7. How much OT will this cost the PO as I am sure the supervisor’s will want correct compensation for having to work Sunday’s and I know the temps can’t work without proper supervision. Between these costs, the expense of operating vehicles, mileage, etc. will take millions of packages to break even.
