USPS transffering letter carriers

Postal carrier-route coverage will be transferred out of the Mountain Lakes office to offices in neighboring towns as the USPS consolidates operations.

12.14.14  New Jersey – Mountain Lakes and six other municipalities in New Jersey will have postal carrier-route coverage transferred to offices in neighboring towns as the U.S. Postal Service consolidates operations.

The transfers of seven Mountain Lakes letter-carriers to work out of the Parsippany-Troy Hills Post Office likely won’t mean much to customers, but the Postal Service says it will help to reduce expenses as it continues to endure billions in lost revenue.

Other transfers slated to take effect on Jan. 1 include Spotswood (seven routes) and Helmetta (one) in Middlesex County and Oradell (nine), Dumont (14) and River Edge (10) in Bergen County.

Postal Service spokesman George Flood said that customers will not see a change in their service, “only that their letter-carriers will start their day in a (from a larger facility) in an adjacent community. Pickups of mail would still be done at their local post office, he said.

  1. OIG did a report about these types of changes…..OIG found that most districts did not do follow up accounting checks to see if these moves actually saved money. Then OIG rolled over and played dead…It did not say districts must do these reports and did not demand that OIG get copies. So now nobody knows if this is a bunch of hooey or not……Bunch of money spent, lots of turmoil and nobody can tell you if these moves actually make financial sense? Not my way to run a business.

  2. The savings comes from the plant not having to send trucks to the offices that are being consolidated. The office will be reduced in level, just not right away.

    • How will the mail get to the PO boxes in that city? You got it, letter carriers delivering it at a higher rate of pay than Highway contract routes. Not considering the delay caused with accountable mail. No savings with that plan!

  3. What people ( the public) do not understand is there has been a plan to take apart the Postal Service and sell off the majority to Privatization! Anything that “management” can do to anger the public and get them to think that this plan is a good thing will be done. This is just another piece of the puzzle to accomplish that goal and unfortunately the old adage,”You don’t know what you’ve lost til it is gone”
seems to be at work here.

    • That BS comes from union leaders without a brain. No company in the world would want to buy the PO or take it free or take billions to take it!

    • Why would the carriers make more money? If their travel to and from the routes are longer than they previously were, then the office will undergo adjustments if those routes are longer due to travel time.
Just like a craft employee to ‘cry’ that the route is longer and need OT to complete.

  4. Every time the USPS comes up with a brilliant idea, the carriers make more money in OT. Keep up the good work USPS management!!

  5. I do not see where there is any savings to the post office making the carriers move to another office and do there routes…only to drive more miles and use more gas …along with the drive time to get to the route..There would be a savings if they lowered the office level or closed the post office in that town…otherwise where is the savings..I should know I went from a small post office with my route to a big post office…Im still trying to figure out where they are saving any money…my small town post office is still there ..same building just alot of extra space where the routes used to be….

    • It’s not about “saving money”. That is simply a lie. The ONLY thing this is about is an “executive” making a decision to conflate their authority to make decisions. “Look at me. I closed offices, therefore I’m important.” Simple as that.

  6. Ok…..lets look at this. It’s going to cost the Post Office more in gas expense. Routes are suppose to be adjusted to eight hours. So it will take longer (and more gas) to drive to and from the new carrier office to the old routes. It the example above, taking 7 routes an extra thirty minutes to and another thirty minutes back to the office, you have seven hours of more time. The new route is also going to take thirty minutes to and from. So there is a new eight hour position. Which would require another vehicle (40 thousand dollars plus) and 50 plus thousand dollar a year salary not counting overtime, sick leave, vacation time, retirement etc. (lets not forget, management claims a carrier makes 80 plus thousand dollars including all the perks) In the long run, what are you saving? More wear and tear on vehicles (All eight routes) . And I don’t care who you are. Traveling greater distances cause delays and will increase chances of accidents. Its the stupid thinking of saving a penny now and spending a dollar forever later. Sure, sell the building and make some money now. But in five years, the cost of gas, vehicle maintenance, employment etc. Not to mention, the over crowding in the building that you’re moving the carriers to. I’ve seen it happen before. In one case at a certain facility, OSHA was brought in by the union because of over crowding at a certain station that absorbed another one. Within a year, the other station was moved into a brand new specially designed trailer that was purchased and placed behind the PO to house the new station. Five years later, the Trailer was condemned because the floor of the trailer was buckling due to the weight of the equipment. They finally had to move the station back out of the trailer into another rented building. The trailer was put up for auction. Nobody bought it, so to get rid of it, it was donated. A less than 5 year old trailer. Yes, the lost money on that deal. Now, years later. They move the station back into the building. Only a matter of time when the Safety team from OSHA is called in again. All of this is due to one simple fact. Congress is forcing a 5.5 billion dollar tax on the Post Office. (2006 Postal accountability act) So the Post Office is trying everything in its power to save money on a Short term fix to try and save money, which in reality is going to COST the service ten times as much in the long run. Which in return is going to cost We/Us, YOU and me as tax payers.
Follow this………. In simple terms……. The Post office is a non-profit organization. Everything it makes is from stamp sales. If it makes a profit at the end of the year…..it goes to the government. TO you and me. The tax payers. When the Post Office makes a profit, WE benefit. If at the end of the year, it doesn’t make a profit. WE, you and me, foot the bill in terms of a line of credit that the Post Office has with the government. Sort of like a credit card. The Post Office pays back the debt WITH INTEREST the following year. So the tax payers line of credit is payed back with interest. The Postal Service has made more money for the tax payers than any other business EVER…..until congressional greed came into play. Years ago, the Postal Service would deduct from the yearly profits enough money to support their commitment to their workers for medical benefits in the workers retirement years. Well congress decided to stop the deductions. Congress decided that money already collected was enough. They wanted more of the profit. So they purposely created a shortage in the Postal Retirement Medical fund. Congress took (stolen) retirement benefits from postal employees. In 2006, Congress realized the mistake and decided it had better do something to replenish this fund. Their solution…..require the Postal Service to fund 5.5 billion dollars, every year for ten years to replenish the fund. So congress took too much of the profit from the post office and now wants the post office to pay for it. Can you believe that?? But here’s the kicker…..WE, you and me, are paying for it. How might you ask??? Well, since the post office has never made 5.5 billion in profits, The Postal Service had to to borrow from that line of credit we as tax payers give them. They exceeded their limit, So Congress increased the borrowing limit. The Post Office has borrowed from the line of credit to pay part of the 5.5 billion fee. Remember this fee is suppose to go toward the postal employee medical fund that congress shorted. So now Congress is reporting the Postal Service is going broke because it isn’t making enough money to operate. When its really congress that is milking the Postal Service dry with this 5.5 billion dollar fee that they created in the first place. The fund by the way has over 50 billion dollars in it. Congress has spent every penny. We, you and me, have a debt from the borrowed money from the Postal Service and Congressmen are making millions selling Postal Property to. Oh, I’m sorry , I’m getting a little ahead of myself.
Certain members of congress want to privatize the Postal Service so they can hire firms that get huge percentages to sell the closed postal properties. These firms employ relatives of congress.

So members of congress are making millions while we, you and me, are stuck with the borrowed line of credit bill. So privatizing the Postal Service is going to make Billionaires Congressmen while adding to the National Debt that we, you and me, and our children…and our children’s children are going to end up paying. Mean while, what nobody else is mentioning. Privatizing the Postal Service is going to cost Us/ We, you and me, more money. You see every, that’s EVERY nation that has ever privatized their postal service has had mailing rates increased and cost of purchasing items become more expense. Let me explain……
If you listen to the news or researched online, you will know, in 90 percent of the time, shipping is cheaper using the Postal Service than Fed Ex, DHL or UPS. Now I’m not going to get into who does it better. I’ve seen stories and reports saying one is better than the other in service. I’ve seen Youtube videos on all three business throwing parcels, employees stealing etc etc etc. If you just take the dollar amount in sending a package. The Postal Service is cheaper by far…….in the United States. Not in the privatized world. You see, when you privatize, the new company is in it to make money. Take Canada for example. In the late 1970’s. You could mail a letters and packages from the USA to Canada for the same postage rate. Somewhere in the early 1980’s Canada privatized their Postal Service. Their congressmen said it would be cheaper on the tax payers, it would cost less, make new jobs (not to mention the loss of jobs from their postal employees being fired) and competition would keep shipping prices low. Well, today, it costs a dollar to mail a one ounce letter in Canada. The United States Postal Service does a two ounce letter for 49 cents. That’s twice the weight for half the price. Canada also charges for forwarding mail, and its expensive. They also have passed a law this year to end home delivery. You must rent a centralize P O Box. You see, it’s all about making money. It’s not a non-profit like the US Postal Service. Which is the reason Fed Ex and UPS is more expensive. Remember the UPS strike several years ago. The get paid more than Postal Employees. Think privatizing the Postal Service is going to be cheaper??? Wake up. Now I know some of you are saying…..I don’t care. I don’t use the Postal Service. It won’t make a difference to my bottom dollar. Think again. Do you know how many business need the Postal Service. By shipping with the Postal Service, they are saving money and in return can sell you products at a cheaper price.
Even UPS use the Postal Service. Postal Employees are delivering UPS packages. They’re called UPS Surepost. Now What UPS will tell you is this SUREPOST is for areas that get few packages and would cost UPS more money just to run these few packages out. Since it’s only a few packages, it saves UPS money to have the Postal Service deliver them since it’s out of the way. In reality, UPS is using this in every city across America. It’s making them money. You see, a privatized UPS has a huge expense in hiring drivers to make home deliveries. UPS has found out it could save billions by shipping their packages and letting the Postal Service deliver them. So they have a contract with the Postal Service. They will drop off their packages by 5 AM to carrier stations. Every package dropped off by 5 AM is delivered by the Postal Service the same day. So they don’t have to pay their Unionized UPS Drivers overtime to deliver packages. UPS also flies the US Mail. It’s a billion dollar contract. So UPS is making money from the Postal Service. All in all, everything will go up in price when Congress privatizes the Postal Service.
If I were a congressman. I would try and bankrupt the Postal Service as soon as possible. I would make billions. I would increase the 2006 affordability act fee from 5.5 billion a year to 25 billion a year. Screw the american tax payer that would foot the bill. I would be rich enough to buy an island and retire with all the worldly riches I would ever need. Thanks to Us, you and me, for letting congress tax the Postal Service to death.
