USPS uses new technology to target voters

USPS is using its popular mobile app to show political campaigns how they can use the mail to communicate with voters this election year.

The Postal Service is sending candidates, strategists and others a new mailer that encourages them to download the USPS “augmented reality” app to their mobile device.

When recipients scan the mailer, they see a message from a “candidate” who describes the benefits of using direct mail in political campaigns.

This is the same technology that allowed app users to snap photos of family and friends posing alongside Charlie Brown and the other “Peanuts” characters last year.

“We want to show candidates and campaigns how they can use the USPS AR app to create an interactive, virtual experience for voters,” said Chris Karpenko, the Postal Service’s acting executive director of brand marketing.

The Postal Service is aiming to capitalize on expected increases in Political Campaign Mail this year.

USPS also has introduced a site, DeliverTheWin.com, to educate campaigns and candidates and formed partnerships with political trade groups and publications.

  1. For the love of God…..please place ” or current resident” on your political mailings. Some of you guys use mailing list from voter registration that are 8 years old. Political mail that’s not first class doesn’t get forwarded. If it is first class and the person moved over a year ago, it is returned to sender. Post office only forwards for a year. All presort standard mail addressed to a person that has move gets trashed. Postal service does not forward presort standard mail, nor does it return it. 99 percent of political mailings are presort standard. If you put “or current resident” on the mailing at least the postal service can leave it at the resident. You would not believe the amount of political ads that is trashed because it is an old mailing list. Carriers place all undeliverable presort standard mail in tubs. Clerks go through it piece by piece checking and verifying that it is presort standard before it goes into the trash. It is far easier to deliver it to someone rather than trashing it. So please, place OR CURRENT RESIDENT on all political mailings. Thank you.
