Vermont Congressman concerned with future of USPS 6-day deliveries
Rep says Congress should stop meddling in agency that’s stabilized
BURLINGTON, Vt. Rep. Peter Welch is promising to fight further efforts in Congress to reform the postal service, which he says has stabilized its finances and should retain Saturday mail delivery.
The Vermont Democrat said the agency battered by the 2008 recession, and a dramatic shift toward electronic mail, has now stabilized its finances and expects to deliver 15 billion pieces of mail over the holiday season.
–Rep. Peter Welch says Congress should stop meddling in the management of the U.S. Postal Service.
Welch held a press conference discussing the issue Friday at a postal center in Burlington. He says a majority of the Republican led Congress have continued an ongoing effort to defund subsidies given to the Postal Service which could have the potential to impact deliveries on Saturdays.
On Friday, Welch joined letter carrier John Rovnek on his delivery route in Burlington. Welch said, “I have so much appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the folks at the USPS, especially around the holidays, when they work 6 days a week to make sure Vermonters get the mail they are depending on in a timely manner.”
He said rural post offices and Saturday mail delivery provide good jobs and a lifeline to their communities.
