BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For years, Bakersfield mail carriers have known that the local postal service sorting facility on Pegasus was set to shut down.
But they had initially been told that it would be closing in June of 2014. Now that date has been pushed up to June first of this year.
Yesterday the Bakersfield American Postal Workers Union met to discuss plans to keep the local plant open.
At risk are 200 sorting facility jobs and 55 clerk positions in Bakersfield.
Thank you for keeping us updated. I incredibly enjoy it and discover all of the information really useful.
My steward began work at the PO in 2003. I started in 1991. I got shipped to another facility and she stayed. When I asked why the supervisor said because she has to file grievances and she is a steward. That’s what I pay dues for. And…by the way…I am also ex-military which didn’t help me any. Supervisor said its called “superseniority”. I tried to file a grievance on it and was told by my chief steward that I couldn’t file on that so I gave him my 1188 and got out of the union.
The whole 50 mile limit is a bunch of bull. I was excessed from Detroit to Pittsburgh NDC which is 260 miles away. All the while Toledo PDC needed clerks and mailhandlers. Go figure.
If your job is eliminated where you live, it don’t matter what you call it (layoff or fired) you can draw unemployment. They can’t force you to move or commute eighty five miles to avoid paying you that. Best check the unemployment rules where you live.
P.O. has turned into a joke……………keep handing out those bonuses and 1st class travel plans to upper management.
I’m seeing it all over again, just like us in Hickory,NC. Don’t waste time or monies figting it. Just make sure that your people have jobs (WHEREEVER) you can get them. We know all to well the outcome of this closure. Take care. God bless.
They offer you a job by any miles, if you don’t take it,that means you are terminated, they don’t lay you off but they just want you to be fired,so they don’t need to pay the unemployment money.
The 50 mile rule is such a joke. The offer you a job and you drive 85 miles, if you dont, well SEE YOU IN THE UNEMPLOYMENT LINE…………….so glad I took the VER this year!!!! Bad times for the workers at the PO
hire more pse they think its the answer. what a joke.saving money mailhandlers working 7 12 hour days.tell the truth one time
they got lucky if they only have to go 85 miles when they close our plant in new jersey some people have to go 485 miles to Youngstown Ohio. told the People in Norfolk Va they can go any were at least they have a job
msfaye2u — unlike clerks the supvs can lose their job.
Whine about an 85 mile commute when if in private industry they would be fired and cheaper help hired at the other plant.
do the supervisors get to stay and supervise nobody because they think the postal service surely can’t get by without them.
50 mile limit on clerk excessing? if the apwu is agreeing to let management excess clerks further than 50 miles they should at least have the decency to publically announce such a shift.
Change name to US Postal Poor Service because that’s what customers are going to get. A letter now has to travel 180 miles to get to your neighbor.
No mile limit when they are trying to lay you off.
What happened to the 50 mile limit?
