Video: Apologetic postal worker with 21 years blames substance abuse for late, trashed mail WARRENSBURG, Mo. – A Warrensburg postal worker who pleaded guilty to federal charges of drinking on the job and dumping mail in the trash said he never meant to hurt anyone. “I just had some problems,” said David Thompson.

In an interview with KMBC 9 News, Thompson was apologetic and remorseful, saying that he worked at the post office for 21 years without any problems, but when things spun out of control, his problems grew as fast as his piles of mail.  Read more

Additional info:

David Thompson stole at least 20,000 pieces of mail addressed to 5,571 recipients, federal authorities said.

Thompson kept the mail at his house, stored it in his personal vehicle or threw it into a trash bin at the Elks Lodge in Warrensburg where he serves as the Exalted Ruler.

Supervisors suspected in late 2013 that Thompson was drinking on the job, so they had the USPS Office of Inspector General install a hidden camera in his delivery vehicle. The camera recorded Thompson drinking five to eight beers daily. He hid the beers in his mail satchel and poured them into a cup he kept in his cup holder.

The video also revealed that Thompson did not deliver all of his mail.

Investigators found four black plastic trash bags filled with more than 500 pieces of mail at the Elks Lodge. Postmarks indicated that the items should have been delivered the week of Jan. 11, 2014.

Authorities said Thompson threw away additional mail to complete his route on time. Discarding it allowed Thompson to have smaller, easier-to-handle bundles. Read more

  1. I second Mike’s statement; do wrong and make us look like idiots you get the boot! This goes for Mgt. as well, like that will EVER happen!! Too many lame brains working for this company and it’s time they start treating it like a company. As of late they are worried about minor stuff and letting the big stuff go, what a bunch of morons!

    • @mike- people do not get any benefits when they resign Dumb@$$

The Letter Carriers as well as the majority of Postal Employees are under CONSTANT pressure to do more with less….. The unfortunate result, is that this individual made a stupid mistake to avoid being called in to the back room and berated or disciplined as a result of not being able to perform the work to the level that is expected.
