Video: Gretna, LA City Official Says Main Post Office looks like it’s in a third world country

FOX 8 WVUE- Gretna, La. – Whether you’re simply dropping a letter in the mail or going inside to buy stamps, it’s hard to miss the conditions of the Gretna Post Office.

“It looks horrible. I mean the grass is super high. It looks really bad,” says Roy Bolds.

“It’s very difficult for government to go out and cite a private property owner if you don’t keep up your own facilities. This is a federal facility so they are responsible for maintaining that,” says Jefferson Parish Councilman Chris Roberts.

The grass is more than a foot tall. Trash and debris litter the parking lot and on the inside, people say it isn’t much better.

“Usually when I go in there in the evening, there’s trash all over the floor,” says Christina Gonzales.

“Just recently, I think the air was out. They had fans and stuff going. I mean the doors are always open,” says Bolds.

The City of Gretna decided to take action and issued a citation violation warning to the Gretna postmaster, citing a broken door, roof maintenance, an unclean lobby, an unclean parking lot and tall grass and debris.

  1. They have the employees however nothing is said or required of them for fear of discrimination lawsuits, fmla and on-the-job injuries all of a sudden being sustained.

  2. dont you all know…..its george bush’s fault lol! 5 years in office and cake boy in white has not lifted one finger to help the PO, or get new mgt!

  3. Upper management does not really care about stuff like this, except when it is publicized. All that drives the postal system is upper management bonuses – “making the numbers” so they can feather their own nests.

I am a retired postal maintenance worker. After working at one location for 13 years, I transferred. Guess what? Ten years later, still no replacement at that facility! And the office I retired from last year? No replacement there either! The last few years there, I could not get week killer, fertilizer, paint, or even boiler water treatment chemicals.

The postal system has lots of great workers, but their hands are tied by upper management, yet they get all the blame for the mis-management at the top. Sad but true!

  4. Its is sad that we do only have one janitor, but still there is a old guy that comes to our P.O. And he does way more than they do and doesn’t even get paid for it. That’s how bad it is.

  5. Hire some real janitors like Hispanics!!! That exactly work and not read and bs all day like the ones we have are super lazy.

  6. I will bet any money that the custodian is out running express mail or he retired and nobody has replaced him. This is typical of many offices these days. Management has their blinders on. All they see is mail!!! Lets go harass some carriers to see if we can shave another 2 minutes off his route. That will save us!

  7. I’m sorry but it time for people like you, Gary Moore to stand up and insist that your union take action. I am saying this as constructive criticism. I intend in no way to offend you. It is time for all of us to take such disgusting conditions to our union and demand satisfaction.

  8. Where is the union? If the Local isn’t doing anything, maybe, it’s time for National to step in. After all, this importable Maintenance condition has drawn nationwide attention. It appears to me that this is the perfect time to file a grievance for a position. I wonder what kind of condition the rest rooms are in?

  9. My place in Columbus ohio is the same way ,weeds growing around the building and trash outside, we have a custodian but he needs supplies to do the job which they wont supply, so our manager decided he would come in on a Saturday and weed around the building which he did once, guess what, he did a terrible job, dont blame the employees for this one this is solely on the shoulders of management, our place looks like some of the foreclosed homes in the area.It is really sad when a customer comes in and says I thought you had closed down.

  10. Its probably more likely that management did not replace the custodian when he/she retired, or they have the custodian doing clerk work & they are already paying a contractor who is not doing his job. When the PO says they are going to “evaluate” anything, you can translate that into meaning that they are looking to close the facility, not fix it in any meaningful manner. The custodial jobs were supposed to be reserved for returning military vets, but they have not hired any full time maintenance people for years, & they probably won`t.

  11. Sounds like the custodian is busy bs-ing his way through his “workday”. And of course the supervisors can’t supervise so whats the point? Maybe they should make em scan bar codes as they complete their tasks!!!
