May 22, 2015 – PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — The fiery crash Wednesday that killed one man and critically injured a mail truck driver destroyed the vast majority of packages inside the truck.
Jared Daniel Mack was driving a red 1999 Ford van around 9:15 p.m. when he allegedly crashed head-on into a semi-truck on NE Columbia Boulevard and 17th Avenue.
The crash set both vehicles on fire, killing Mack and critically injuring truck driver Mike Robertson Harp, who was driving for Dill Star Routes. That company contracts with the US Postal Service.
Harp, 54, remains in the burn unit at Legacy Emmanuel, authorities told KOIN 6 News.
USPS Corporate Communications spokesperson Peter Hass said there were about 1500 packages inside the trailer. Most of them were damaged or destroyed.
