Video Update: Postal Worker wanted to kill himself in front of USPS VMF Manager

ALBUQUERQUE (KRQE) – The postal employee accused of bringing a gun to work Monday says he didn’t intend to hurt anyone but himself.

The man identified as Larry Lamascus is a vehicle maintenance worker at the shop next to the main post office on Broadway and mountain in downtown Albuquerque.

Lamascus’ supervisor says Lamascus pulled out a gun and pointed it at him then he wrestled it out of his hand. During the struggle, the gun went off. Lamascus says his intention was to kill himself in front of his supervisor, who he says hassled him over sick days.

Lamascus is charged with possessing a firearm in federal facility and assault of a federal employee.

Investigators say they did find a suicide note after Lamascus’ arrest.

According to police, Lamascus went into VMF Manager’s office, produced a gun from a leather pouch and pointed it at VMF Manager. VMF Manager came around his desk and put Lamascus into a headlock and attempted to point the gun away from them. USPS VMF Supervisor and VMF Technician entered the room to help VMF Manager control the gun. The VMF Technician stated that VMF Supervisor jumped on the gun and the gun went off. A single shot was fired into the office that did not result in any injuries. VMF Manager and Supervisor wrestled the gun away from Lamascus and called 911.They placed Lamascus into a chair until police arrived.

Lamascus stated that several weeks ago, he took a couple of sick days. He stated that VMF Manager called him into his office and convinced him that he had nothing to offer the USPS. Lamascus stated that VMF Manager had it in for him for a long time due to his medical issues. Lamascus had asked for reasonable accommodations and VMF Manager fought him tooth and nail. Lamascus stated that he wanted to personally hand his keys and ID badge because VMF Manager wanted him out of the VMF. Lamascus stated he had no intention of harming anyone other than himself. He stated that unfortunately, the VMF Manager grabbed him.

Lamascus, a Lead Automotive Technician, has worked for USPS since 2002.

  2. Let me get this straight, a manager gets a loaded gun pointed at him, he gets up walks around the desk and puts the man in a headlock?!? wowzer, he mustve been in the Marines!

  3. In addition, this did NOT take place prior to 0600, or people from the P&DC would have saw something happening.

    Our Supervisor Tommy, saved Matt’s life.

    Larry’s wife has termial cancer, and Larry was out of leave after coming back from 3 weeks of AL, and one week of FMLA.
