Unique partnership between USPS and QCA schools helps ensure that every student has school supplies

August 8, 2015 – Today wasn’t just a regular day on the job for the USPS mail carriers in Bettendorf. All the the carriers for the day brought back an extra load to the post office. This load included pencils, notebook and rulers, all supplies that children in the Bettendorf School District will need when they head back to classroom.

But Bettendorf isn’t the only school district that uses this unique collection method.“It has been about ten years since we have been doing the school supply drive,”said K-8 Outreach Coordinator for the Bettendorf School District, Barbara Jordan. [But] about five years ago both sides of the river, the Illinois and the Iowa [sides], the school districts got together and decided that we would all work together to help children in need.”

The QCA wide supplies drive has an important partnership with USPS, which drops off the supplies after they are collected.

How many kids in Bettendorf the drive will help is still yet to be seen, but this school supplies drive helped almost 600 students at Bettendorf last year. The supplies are given out to families that qualify for free or reduced meals, but the administration at Bettendorf never turns down a child in need.
