Video: USPS apologizes to Pennsylvania couple for damaged package

From his basement office, Joe Hainey watched as the SUV slowly snaked its way up the curved driveway, stopping just long enough for someone to lean out the window and drop a package on to the asphalt.

Ray V. Daiutolo Sr., a spokesman for the U.S. Post Office, said the person who delivered the Haineys’ cat food is a rural carrier employed by the agency.

“It appears as though the package was not handled according to our standards,” he said in an email. “All mail deserves proper care and handling as it moves through our system. Our customers expect that we will meet that commitment and we are proud of our history of providing safe and reliable delivery. The postal service is aware of the frustration and disappointment caused when we do not live up to our commitment of safe and reliable mail service.”

Daiutolo said he didn’t know what brought about the troubled delivery.

“The matter is being addressed by the local post office and it will take whatever steps it needs to take,” he said.
