Video: USPS testing package-sized mailboxes

NEWHALL, CA (CBS) – Package delivery can be tricky – sometimes a box can’t be left without a signature and those dropped at the front door could be damaged by weather. But now, the United States Postal Service may have a solution – bigger mailboxes.

The Postal Service is testing larger, package-friendly mailboxes.

Ron Ronaldi has been working for the agency for 18 years and says the new boxes allow him to work faster.

“I’m able to drive up, open the door, scan the package and the mail, and put it all in one centrally located spot,” Ronaldi said.

The 13-by-7 inch mailboxes are part of a pilot program underway in a handful of communities across the country. They allow carriers to deliver boxes that might otherwise be taken back to the post office if no one is home.

The USPS is hoping that these larger mailboxes will also deliver a boost in business for the agency.

  1. I doubt the USPS will have any luck trying to force customers to switch to larger boxes, although it would help our street time somewhat, at least mounted routes and mounted portions of routes. My main problem with the increased parcel business is one I’ll never see resolved because I retire at the end of next year. LLV’s are outmoded, run terribly, are beastly hot this time of year, and on really heavy parcel days like Mondays and days after holidays, no matter how carefully you place your parcels in route order on the deck, they get shuffled, topple, mixed up and force the carrier to resort them several times on the route to make sure they’re not overlooked.
We need side loading capacity, a deck with a high enough ceiling that allows us to stand up straight, and racks on the walls to hold parcels. Apparently those modifications are being looked into, but I don’t expect to see a new vehicle before 2019 or 2020. They say 2017, but nothing moves swiftly in the Postal Service except promotions for undeserving management and CCA’s and young regulars.
For nostalgia’s sake, remember back when we had to use those Jeeps? You had to deliver packages first, sometimes making two or three trips before coming back and loading up your letters and flats. Of course, there was more help back then, but those Jeeps were nightmares!

    • I can give you the instructions we got at our office: before Christmas we were told not to leave any parcel and leave notices if they didn’t fit in the box. We told management the customers in decent neighborhoods would have a fucking fit, but no, it fell on deaf ears. Well, we were right. The phones rang off the wall, and management had to deal with irate customers.
Well, about two months ago we were told to leave every parcel at the address unless it required a signature or it was a “bad” area. Whichever way the wind blows, and no matter what you do, if management gets a lot of complaints, it’ll be your fault.

  2. Doesn’t matter, lasership, ups and fed ex will use it for their parcels leaving no room for the post office parcels. funny they don’t show a amazon box. Just try to fit 2 or 3 amazon parcels in that box, NOT

  3. Oh and that 20 to 30 minutes the carrier will save by not having to dismount. Here comes the route adjustment. More deliveries.

    • Speaking of route adjustments, do other offices have the same problem we do, with CCA’s and younger regulars sucking up to management, not even associating with long time carriers, and priding themselves on how fast they carry mail? It goes without saying that after one of these miracle workers deliver your route, it looks like a typhoon struck.
The last couple of carriers to get converted to regular positions on a daily basis see no problem with casing up two routes, carrying a couple hours of swings, skipping lunch and even using annual leave at days’ end. Never saw anything like it. We can’t reason with them, warn them that they are cutting their own throats, and making it impossible for CCA’s to convert. They think we’re a bunch of old dinosaurs and pretty much don’t want anything to do with us, and this old dinosaur still carries 960 stops after 30 years. I hardly think that’s lazy for being 54.
We try to warn them what will happen if we have a count. They think because they run, management would NEVER think about abolishing routes. Well, if we get counted, we’ll probably lose two routes, maybe three, thanks to these idiots. Management LOVES the new running attitude, and they are ready to strike.

  4. after decades of not setting standards for mailbox sizes, the post office now wants to make a better mailbox. I have over 700 curbside deliveries on my route with some mail boxes over 30 years old, banged up, rusted, maladjusted doors and some held together by rope and bungee cords. Does the post office believe that everyone or anyone is going to replace their mailbox. LOL

    • You have a thousand member team of expert management go out and watch carriers put mail in the boxes and pretend you understand everything they do.

  5. USPS Management asleep at the wheel – again. UPS walks up to the door and hands it to you or comes back two more times without asking them to do so. Now it will be even easier and faster for the thieves to follow behind the mailman and score some free parcels.
