MADISON, WIS. — John W. Vaudreuil, United States Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin, announced that Katie Dassow, 26, Medford, Wis., was sentenced yesterday by U.S. District Judge William Conley to 30 days in jail for theft of mail by a postal employee.  This term of imprisonment will be followed by two years of supervised release.

In addition to the jail time and supervised release, Judge Conley ordered Dassow to pay a $100 fine, a $100 special assessment, and $155 in restitution.

Dassow pleaded guilty to this charge on December 19, 2013.  Dassow admitted to removing cash from items of mail while she was employed at the St. Germain Post Office in May and June 2013.

In sentencing the defendant, Judge Conley said that postal workers are given a special trust by the American people and the defendant violated that trust.

The charge against Dassow was the result of an investigation conducted by the U.S. Postal Service, Office of Inspector General.  The prosecution of the case has been handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Elizabeth Altman.
