Would End Saturday Delivery; Give ‘Savings’ to Highway Trust Fund
June 16, 2014 – The Postmaster General’s latest act of treachery is so outrageous it’s hard to believe.
Last week, he endorsed a budget scam that would eliminate Saturday mail delivery and hand over the alleged “savings” to the Highway Trust Fund.
The ploy, which was the brainchild of outgoing House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA), would eliminate tens of thousands of jobs and reduce service significantly.
The scheme was immediately denounced by Democrats – and many Republicans – as a gimmick that would yield no real savings. That’s because the maneuver is based on a fiction: It assumes there will be “real savings for the Treasury” from a hypothetical future event – a postal bailout.
“Slashing mail delivery service makes no sense in any circumstance, but especially as part of legislation designed to strengthen our nation’s transportation infrastructure,” the four postal union presidents wrote in a June 2 letter to members of Congress. “The USPS is off‐budget and receives no taxpayer support whatsoever. Using the Postal Service as an offset for the Highway Trust Fund is a shell game that relies on illusory savings and accounting gimmicks.”
But that didn’t deter our feckless leader. As the Washington Post reported on June 9, “A plan from House Republicans to buoy the nearly-empty highway trust fund with savings from eliminating Saturday mail delivery has struck many observers as an odd idea – a budget accounting trick that would finance road projects by preventing a future bailout of the U.S. Postal Service.
“But the top postal official says he couldn’t be more pleased.”
Fredric Rolando, president of the National Association of Letter Carriers, issued a scathing response, in a statement posted on the union’s website on June 14:
“Mr. Donahoe’s action may be the most irresponsible thing any Postmaster General has done since the creation of the Postal Service in 1970. If allowed to succeed, this budget gimmick would have set a terrible precedent for the Postal Service. Why raise taxes or reduce spending at taxpayer-funded agencies, when you can pay for pet projects with legislated service cuts at the Postal Service? Need a new aircraft carrier? Slash post office hours. Want a new fleet of planes to fight forest fires? Raise postage rates. The PMG recklessly risked undoing all the hard work we did in the late 1980s to get the Postal Service off-budget, to shield the Postal Service and ratepayers from scheming politicians like Rep. Cantor. The PMG owes every postal employee and every postage rate-payer an apology.”
“We couldn’t agree more,” said APWU President Mark Dimondstein.

Because he can! The PMG should be put back on the cabinet where he belongs, then his endorsement would be more justified. What a bunch of losers at best.
“Donahoe’s Treachery,…” this and multiple other inflamitory/derogatory comments/attitudes from leadership and members is why I am not a member of any union and discourage anyone from participation. I don’t see this kind of degrading language out of mgt. (no I’m not in mgt.) and even if they do it doesn’t excuse your nearly libalous language.
I suggest you get a comment from the PMG on your disagreement and post that so we can see why he’s supporting that. Likely I don’t agree with this either but that doesn’t make the one I disagree with a “treach”; what does it say about the name caller?
This endorsement of the dream to take funds from the Postal service and give said funds to the highway trust fund shows that king Donahoe is really an engineer! He is an expert in dismantiling ,destroying any thing he can get his hands on!
There is apparently nothing Donohoe is afraid to do. He knows no agency like the GAO or BOG has the balls or authority to go after him and President Obama is too wrapped up in his own disasters to care. Donohoe is the postal equivalent of a dictator, surrounded by lackeys who kiss his fat ass but don’t have the guts to plot his demise. Even Hitler had people on the inside try to remove him. But there are severe consequences for whistleblowers these days, so only Obama or his successor may have any luck deposing Donohoe.
A nationwide campaign with labor and reasonable managers (if there are any) to demand his removal and Congressional investigations into his mishandling of Postal funds could be effective if Areas and Districts unified and simply refused to cooperate with Donohoe. But then again I also believe I can fly. You gotta believe! You gotta believe!
donahoe is as bad as potter, and not harry potter, he wants to destroy the post office and eat it’s dead carcass. just look in his eye’s, president Obama should replace him now.
I think Donahoe should be charged with treason
Wings and a magic wand and off he goes again.
When you hear the jungle drums a bang’n, you know the awesome value’s happening! It’s an opportunity to grab a few banana’s of real value!
All along, I thought it was Issa that was the biggest thorn in the side of the USPS. Unfortunately, it’s Donahoe!! He alone will privitize the USPS. The Postal Board of Governers better take a hard look at this caniving idiot and stop him in his tracks.
What a slimy, despicable tool Donahoe is. This loser needs to go, and soon. Do the honorable thing and resign. Then take your new position with either Fedex or UPS. The man is embarrassing and a disgrace.
I don’t know why everyone is so surprised by the PMG’s actions on the highway trust fund fiasco! This guy is a true politician if I ever saw one! His way of thinking is if he endorses Cantor’s proposal (no matter how stupid it is) Cantor will return the favor by pushing through the PMG’s postal reform (the one that gave him everything he wanted!) I think we should get a petition going to elect FORREST GUMP to be the next PMG….at least he has some common sense!!!
