A postal carrier is sought for animal cruelty in connection with the death of Maxwell, a Yorkshire terrier.
Police obtained an arrest warrant for a mail carrier accused in May of fatally injuring a 10-pound Yorkshire terrier with a rock, shattering his skull and inflicting a severe spinal cord injury.
The postal worker, who faces a felony animal cruelty charge, has been on paid leave since the May 17 incident in Meadowbrook. The dog’s owner, Lawrence Brown, said Wednesday that he and his wife, Taiesha, want to see the carrier lose his job and spend time in jail.
“I want the maximum that can be given to him,” Lawrence Brown said.
The dog, Maxwell, was not on a leash and was across the street from the Browns’ house when he was hit with the rock. A veterinarian told the Browns that the dog was so badly injured he could not be saved, so Maxwell was euthanized.
Brown said that when he heard Maxwell yelp and confronted the mail carrier, the man told him he felt threatened by the dog and did what he had to do to protect himself. Brown doesn’t believe that.
“I understand what the law is about no leash, but our dog didn’t deserve to die,” Brown said. “He wasn’t aggressive. He was friendly and everybody played with him.”
Arrest warrant issued for mail carrier who hit Yorkie with rock
Scot, if you are truly a local director I think you should resign immediately. With your attitude you could face labor charges and put your local in jepody of the same
I been a city carrier for 16 years and I had my share of dog attacks. A dog attack can range from an aggressive dog confronting you or biting you. Small dogs 10 lbs or less are more mean and aggressisive than a 50 lb lab. They also have small teeth to rip your skin and COULD be rabbis. As for mace, that only works in idea settings of calm days with no wind or rain. If the carrier hit this dog with a rock, dog must of been near him and that is classified as a dog attack. As for the responder earlier who is a union president, you are a moron! This carrier, a union brother, got in a dog attack and defended himself. Its not like he walked in the owners yard and hit dog on a chain.
We are talking about a Yorkie here. Dumb move by the carrier. Surprised he has been a letter carrier for 14 years (or maybe I’m not surprised!)
Taiesha said that? And what did Luquida say? I bet Twon was pissed!
I think it is time for people to realize pet ownership is a privlage. The article said the dog was loose and across the street. The owners of the dog are at fault.Had they been more responsible the dog might still be alive.I dont care how big a dog is, if its loose I will defend myself. They arrested the wrong person,it should have been the dog owner. I think they should give the carrier a medal.
the owner said the dog got out of the BACK yard and the owner didn’t know the dog wonder across the street also said the carrier knew the dog.
For Super Carrier, I was curious as well as to whether or not he was a CCA. As it turns out, he is a regular with 1997 seniority according to the site where one can access postal salary information.
How this miscreant has a job is beyond me. A 10 pound Yorkie poses no threat to his or her well being. This is simply a depraved action by someone who probably shouldn’t be dealing with the public. And for the record I’ve been a letter carrier for over 30 years. I’ve been attacked and bitten several times by dogs far larger than this one. Everyone has a right to defend themselves, but there’s no justification for what was done to that poor creature.
all this wasted on a dog when he should have done it to a greater threat…….a libtard demonrat!
I don’t care how small the dog is, you can do whatever is necessary to protect yourself. Little dogs (especially yorkies) are very prone to biting. Any dog bite is serious as it can lead to infection. In addition, a dog does not have to bite to cause injury. A person can very easily hurt themselves while avoiding a dog, whether it’s from a misstep, twisting in an unnatural way or whatever. Bottom line is the dog was loose. The responsibility lays with the dog owners. I had two yorkies chase me around one time and I threw my scanner at them to chase them off. I’ve also been bitten by a little tiny yorkie on the back of my calf. Little rat hardly made a sound before chomping a whole in my leg. If it’s between me going home safe and a dog getting hurt, I’ll take option number two every day!!
Stand your ground… Unless it is a dog that’s about to hurt you.
I am a huge advocate of animal rights and tales of abuse make me literally sick. We deliver stuff from the ASPCA and Humane Society with pictures and stories of horrifying tales of abuse of defenseless animals, and I can’t look at it. Humans can be kind and loving, and they can be the meanest sickest bastards in the universe. Anybody who abuses animals will not hesitate to do so to his children or spouse, either, as far as I’m concerned.
I’ll have 30 years in in October, and never have I done anything to hurt an animal. I’ve had to use pepper spray a time or two and boot a couple of dogs trying to bite me out of my way, but just enough to discourage, not hurt. My view is, it’s the owner, not the dog that’s in the wrong for letting it run loose. Even so, this carrier is obviously a sick coward and could easily have defended himself if the little Yorkie was trying to bite by putting his satchel between him and the dog or using the pepper spray. There was no excuse for what this sonofabitch did.
He deserves the most severe penalty possible, not to mention lose his job. I’m the NALC branch president and I would not defend a carrier in my branch who did something like this. I would resign first.
I know one asshole in our office who at least for a while was getting his rocks off by going up to fences and spraying dogs through the fence! Management, in their typical fashion, did nothing. When I had foot routes, I made buddies with as many pets as possible, and it was impossible to do a swing without going up to a fence at least once or twice to pet and say hi to a friend. It made their day and mine, too.
My sympathies to the owner of the poor dog. I have a few Yorkies on my route and they’re the happiest gentlest dogs in the world. Never has one acted aggressively toward me.
My wife and I are childless, and have a tom cat about 8 or so years old. He’s our “baby”, we’re hopelessly attached, and I would not hesitate to put anybody six feet under who tried to hurt him especially since he’s an indoor cat and declawed.
This carrier is a disgrace to the uniform, a coward and just a mean piece of shit. You have embarrassed all good letter carriers and you deserve hard time.
As a postal employee, I want the murderer to lose his job and get the maximum jail time. To the Brown family, I am equally heartbroken and outraged over the senseless loss of your beloved pet.
Is the carrier a regular, or a CCA? The article did not say, and I am just curious.
Why was the dog running loose in violation of the law? Why hasn’t the owner been issued a citation for the dog running free? The reality is the owner killed his own dog by not keeping it restrained as per the law.
Why did the carrier not use his dog spray and satchell that is issued to him? The spray would have definitely worked on this small dog. He should be suspended.
Can’t you read? He was across the street from the owner’s house, not across the street from the dog.
Sorry about the dog,but as a carrier over 30yrs who has been attacked 7 times. The Dog was not on leash. The carrier should have had his or her spray. The rock seem harsh, but he or she is still in a pay status means there more there than meant the eyes
Troy MCclure——The dog, Maxwell, was not on a leash and was across the street from the Browns’ house when he was hit with the rock
READ IT ALL BEFORE PASSING JUDGEMENT
the mailman was not across the street from the dog…the dog was across the street from it’s home.
I dont care if the dog is across the street, once he stares at me he means business, i would have looked for a bat or a big stick and be ready to swing if he attacks me, everyone says that their dog is friendly and he is but not to strangers, the carrier did the right thing, he shouldnt lose his job just give him a letter of warning, im sure he didnt mean to kill him it was just the heat of the moment
If the dog was across the street, how did the carrier feel threatened? This guy should definately lose his job and if not jail time, then spend a few hundred hours with PITA or at an animal shelter.
the answer is not always that black and white, I did the SAME THING over 30 years ago when I was a new mailman, I had been attacked by dogs 3 times that year, german shepherds, dobermans and a mutt. The post office almost always makes it your fault when you are bit, they say you should have been more aware, but sometimes dogs rush at you from seemingly no where. One day I was walking on a new route when a small off leash yelping barking dog ran up to me going nuts, no owner around, you may argue that it is a small dog, small dogs have teeth too, and if you get bit, trust me, YOU are in trouble with the post office. The dog made a couple passes at my legs and I am screaming for him to get away,I look down, pick up a rock, not a huge rock but a rock none the less, and threw it trying to scare the dog off, normally when you reach down for a rack the dogs back off. I was not trying to hurt the dog, I was trying to scare it off, but it did happen fast, I was yelling GO AWAY! Unfortunately I hit the dog in the head, I didnt try to, and the dog dropped. Thank goodness it was only stunned, it got back up (after I thought oh no, I killed it!)and ran away yelping. My intentions where not to hit the dog but scare it away. I love dogs, this isnt a case of black or white, there is a lot of gray here.
police officers get attacked by dogs of all sizes all the time especially during drug raids. they will draw there glock 45 auto handgun and blow that dog away in a way that dirty harry would be proud of. that carrier needs a glock 45 not a freakin rock.
he should get the death penalty.
The carrier should be disciplined but he should not lose his job over killing a dog. It’s understandable the couple is upset over their dog’s sudden death, but for this couple to wish for someone to loose their job that takes care of their family shows a lack of compassion on their part.
I’m tired of walking up to peoples homes and being confronted by these people’s animals. If the dog was on a leash. This wouldn’t have happened. He won’t. Lose his job or be prosecuted screw these ppl
As a mailman with 30 years of service justifying hit a small animal with a large enough rock to cause enough damage to kill the animal is just plain stupidity. There is no way a dog of that size could have seriously injured you enough to justify your actions. You should definitely be held accountable for your cruel treatment of this animal. Im so sorry for the Browns loss of there beautiful animal although the leash might have saved the animal in this case a better result simply could have been attained through a wiser choice by the carrier who i would suggest wanted to hurt the dog and got more that he bargained for in the end.
