The Postal Service has started to implement its National Recycling Operation, which is expected to double the organization’s recycling rates during the next five years.
The new initiative could generate more than $133 million in combined savings and revenue.
Under the program, USPS will turn waste into material that can be sold to the recycling market and increase savings by reducing waste disposal costs.
Initially, the National Recycling Operation will focus on undeliverable Standard Mail, discarded mail from retail lobbies and other paper waste. USPS will use its own equipment and vehicles to backhaul — or transport — this material from Post Offices to recycling hubs at postal plants.
“Hub facility recycling operations must now be embraced by all of us as a new business value center. Recycling can no longer be considered an optional part of our business,” COO Megan Brennan says in a video introducing the program.
More than 200 postal facilities will participate in the program and receive training and new equipment, including compactors and dumpers, Chief Sustainability Officer Tom Day says in the video.
“Eliminating waste is a key economic driver for all organizations in this day and age. The communities we serve and our customers have an expectation that the Postal Service will do its part and recycle,” Day says.
