PMG Donahoe supports GOP plan to raid USPS finances for Highway Trust Fund

gao_st14PMG Donahoe is pushing to change the healthcare of current and retired employees in order to save USPS money. But yet USPS has money to fund the Highway Trust Fund. What did I miss?

From the Washington Post:

A plan from House Republicans to buoy the nearly-empty highway trust fund with savings from eliminating Saturday mail delivery has struck many observers as an odd idea — a budget accounting trick that would finance road projects by preventing a future bailout of the U.S. Postal Service.

But the top postal official says he couldn’t be more pleased.

“We not only need five-day delivery,” Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe said in an interview. “But I would say, if this was able to help take the angst out of the [broader postal] legislation for some lawmakers, that would help us out.”

Donahoe has long pushed to eliminate Saturday delivery of letters, a service cut that’s estimated to save the financially strapped mail agency about $2 billion a year (some Democrats, labor unions and postal regulators have questioned whether the savings could be that high).

Last year, frustrated that Congress has been unable to reach consensus on a broad package of reforms to stabilize postal finances, Donahoe tried and failed to do an end run around lawmakers and move ahead with five-day delivery on his own.

  1. BKizzle-Downahole still wants to keep 6 day delivery and possibly 7 for parcels, where volume is increasing and somebody has to deliver them and it will be you!

  2. Dear Bkizzle, You want five day delivery. When that happens, how safe is your job! New Zealand, and Australia, are going for three day delivery. Perhaps you can become Donahoe’s limousine driver!

  3. WONDER HOW MUCH MONEY HE IS GETTING OUT OF THIS DEAL! HE NEEDS TO BE FIRED.
HE IS A TRAITOR TO THE POST OFFICE.

  4. This just proves what I’ve been saying for years – there is only one way to fix the Postal Service – fire every boss above first level supervisor and start over. Maybe they can find a job they’re more capable of – like slinging burgers.

  5. This takes the cake. How could any Postmaster General support out and out theft from his budget when said budget is supposedly so cash strapped? Donohoe wants the USPS to fail, pure and simple. He’s getting big bucks under the table to destroy us, and to allow Congress to rape the Service for supposed highway funding just proves how destructive this sonofabitch is.
And where the hell is the BOG or President on this matter? Just by supporting Congress’ plans to steal from the USPS should be cause for removal. It’s one thing to want five day delivery, but what good is it if it costs money to do it to the tune of 10 million? Those “savings” of 2 billion a year are estimates, and we know how accurate those have been in the past.
Where are the underlings in all of this at L’Infant Plaza? Does anybody have the balls to tell Donohoe his actions are in total opposition of what needs to be done to keep the Service healthy? Are they that afraid of this lunatic, or do they agree too, as most managers being of a kiss ass mentality tend to be?
The calls for Donohoe’s removal must be louder and more publicized than ever. This comment is totally unforgivable. You, Mr. PMG, are a charlatan, phony and saboteur of the USPS. No single PMG has come close to the disastrous direction you’ve pushed us, and you must go. Take that Issa with you, since you two are obviously butt buddies anyway.

  6. start a petition to remove Donahue, send him back as a clerk to the smallest town in Alaska where he can do no harm.

  7. Donawhore is still there because six of the ten seats on the BOG are vacant and three of the four members are Repukes appointed by Bush who are providing zero oversight and looking the other way as Donawhore continues to show his incompetence.

  8. There we have it in black and white.

Donuthole’s rabbit is out of his hat now.

Let there be no more doubt of his intentions to ruin the USPS, for his, and others, personal gain.

  9. Why Does donahue still have a job, HE(and congress) is what’s wrong with the USPS!!!!

  10. Not to be redundant but how do we give the mighty OZ
(congress) the right to pillage a public service that
does not take tax payer money to support itself. They
have used the raising of the gas tax per gallon for quite
some time now and refuse to exercise a windfall tax on
oil companies to offset this highway fund. How desperate
is the PMG to agree with this robbery in progress. The
postal service loses whatever financial gains are predicted
from ending saturday delivery to the highway fund in exchange
for future savings. How naive to think once the looting begins
that the poaches won’t be back to rob again whenever the fund
is in trouble. There is nothing that Eric Cantor can say to
put a bandaid on this so we all feel better about it. They are
wolfs in sheeps clothing hoping to convince us it isn’t as bad
as it looks. They have no compassion for all the employee’s and
customers that will be effected by this, not to mention the
continued derailment of postal reform instigated primarily by
the repukes resisitant to reform that is fair and equitable to
the service, it’s employee’s, and the American people who depend
    on us daily.

  11. I am now convinced that Donahoe would sell his soul to the devil to get ANY sort of legislation reform passed!! I’m really starting to believe that he is in cahoots with Capitol Hill lawmakers. The USPS is DOOMED!!

  12. What is a pig after you put lipstick on. It’s still a pig. We have a infiltration here and it’s obvious. How do you dismantle the post office and sell off it’s historic post offices and get it on the road to privatization. You hire donahue and he will take care of it. Marvin Runyon wanted to do it and failed because he did not have issa in congress. Together they are masterfully ending the united states postal service. The staples outsourcing is a prime example. They have closed many of their stores and are desperate to get back on track and if that means helping getting rid of the u.s. postal service then so be it. People don’t realize that this is the best bang for the buck and they will regret it if it goes away. Compare prices at ups and fedex for alternative delivery because if we go down then you will pay their prices and donahue will be going from a governors salary to a whopping private 3 million dollar a year salary. You fools might get your way and you will regret it.
