The US Postal Service has issued a solicitation seeking contractors to rent vans and minivans for use in delivering packages during holiday season:

The U.S. Postal Service will rent minivan cargo vans and cargo vans (low, medium and high roof) up to 2 tons capacity for delivery of packages and to fill in for vehicles out of service.

The contract term shall extend from October 1, 2015, or date of award, whichever is later, for a period of one year, with one (1) year renewal option with advance notice of intent to renew with 30 days of contract expiration date. Rental periods will be for day(s), week(s), and month(s) up to one (1) year.

The total number of vehicles is unknown.  We are projecting the estimated value of the contract could range into the upper six figures per year.  However, there is NO GUARANTEE that the number of vehicle rentals will result in this level of spend. Mail volumes and number of carrier delivery route expansion will influence the demand. During the holiday season on can anticipate that a single location may have a demand level of 50 to 100 vehicles.

We anticipate that the bulk of the rentals will take place between October and January. The Metropolitan areas will likely need greater numbers of rental vehicles, whereas the suburban areas will likely not require more than 1 or 2 rental vehicles.

In the 2014 holiday season (formerly known as Christmas), postal districts encompassing major metropolitan areas were asking for 50 to 100 vehicles to handle the added package/parcel business.

The period of performance will extend to the end of the rental period based on inception date of rental agreement entered into within the contract term

Last year USPS spent approximately $712,000 to rent the same type of vehicles
