Hancock County officials and the United States Postal Service are trying to figure out how hundreds of mailed legal notices went missing.

Earlier in March, the county court mailed out 75 notices for jury duty for a murder trial. The probation department also mailed out 170 notices to individuals to report for drug and alcohol screenings.

In both cases, not a single individual reported to court or the probation department — because they never received the notices in the mail.

The county’s chief probation officer, Wayne Addison, said Monday he has not had any contact with the postal service about what might have happened. Read more
