Video: OIG Report criticizes USPS handling of marijuana

WASHINGTON, D.C. – (NEWSCHANNEL 3) – Through a Freedom of Information Act request the I-Team has uncovered a previously redacted audit taking a critical look at how the U.S. Postal Service is dealing with a surge of marijuana being illegally shipped throughout the United States.

“We did not post this report due to concerns with information…” read the initial email sent by the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General division (OIG).

That peaked the I-Team’s interest enough to request that some of the report be released.

Eventually, the I-Team was provided with a heavily redacted version of the report that criticizes the U.S. Postal Service and Postal Inspectors at 7 unidentified post offices.

“…post office personnel were not always sufficiently trained to provide additional security for packages suspected of containing marijuana,” reads part of the audit.

The report was prompted by allegations made against employees “handling of packages suspected of containing marijuana”, but due to the heavily redacted nature of the report those allegations are not clear.

Some of the critiques revolve around the lack of security following the discovery of marijuana packages.

“The postmaster stated that he holds packages suspected of containing marijuana in his office, which is generally unlocked,” reads the audit in part. “The postmaster also stated he was not aware of any procedures and did not receive training to secure suspected packages containing marijuana.” Read more
