PECOS, Texas –A group of U.S. Postal Service mail carriers accused a Pecos postmaster of racial discrimination, civil rights advocates and union leaders said.
According to grievances filed with LULAC, the League of United Latin American Citizens, postmaster David Neilon allegedly instructed Pecos Post Office employees not to speak Spanish and made derogatory comments about Mexican immigrants.
“There’s no post office rule about what language they should be speaking at work,” said LULAC director Ruben Ramirez. “He held a meeting with eight of them and said, ‘Once you cross that border, you’re not supposed to be speaking Spanish anywhere… not just the post office, but everywhere… Being a supervisor for the U.S. Postal Service, it’s very inappropriate how he let that out.”
A number of postal customers in Pecos only speak Spanish or are most comfortable speaking Spanish, he added. Read more

Jim,
yes we are in America where we as a diverse nation speak Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, Hebrew, Koran, Chinese, French, Gaelic, German and many other dialects. To be able to speak and understand more than one language I feel is a sign of intelligence, something that someone like you is sorely missing. Like people like yourself you feel that you are the center of the universe and completely paranoid of any one who knows or has experience of anything different from you in their environment.
Racial discrimination? Why not National Origin discrimination? I do not see how it is in the Hispanic employees’ interests to draw attention to this issue. They buy their community and their cause millions of dollars in negative publicity by appearing to insist on speaking Spanish. They are projecting themselves as a text book example of their enemies stereotypical image of immigrants who refuse to assimilate. I don’t think that was their intent, but it will be the result. Just a file a grievance, and resolve the matter quietly. While it may be lawful, it is unwise to demand the right to speak Spanish in this political climate and environment. Why give your opponents a stick to beat your community over the head with?
Typical Postal Supervisor Scumbag. Probably related to the District Manager. The stories that can be told about these inadequate, immoral and untrained lackeys
would amaze the tabloids. They get these positions because they are willing to do anything up to and including eating their own young. VILE, VILE, unhuman beings.
Thank God I have 35 years and will retire soon. GOOD LUCK to the new employees,
You will need it.
Typical Proud EAS Racist costing the USPS yet MORE million$$$.
I’m sure the Germans, Italians, Polish, Russians can speak freely. CONGRATS, IDIOT.
Waaaah, waaaah! Welcome to American, now learn English, dammit.
Ahh, you are in America, we speak English here, if you want to speak a language other than English, do it in private and please do not expect the rest of us to think you are not talking about those around you, or you can return to whatever country speaks the language and use it all you want.
I think the supervisor was appropriate, many people use a language other than English to speak derogatory about those in close proximity. Thats why these other languages are being used, how can any organization support this? They are the racists, trying to impose their language on others.
