Colorado Postal Manager Sentenced for Lying About Cancer in Order to Take Sick Leave

Defendant faked doctor notes and planned to lie about sickness until her retirement

USPS-IG-logo8/22/2017 DENVER – Caroline Zarate Boyle, age 60, of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, was sentenced today by U.S. District Court Judge Raymond P. Moore to serve 5 years’ probation with the first 6 months in home confinement including wearing an electronic monitor. She was also ordered to pay a $10,000 fine and spend 652 hours doing community service to be served at a cancer treatment center, cancer research center or hospice. Finally, she was ordered to pay $20,798.38 in restitution to the U.S. Postal Service, Acting U.S. Attorney Bob Troyer and Executive Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General announced.

Boyle was first charged by Criminal Complaint on March 3, 2017. She was indicted by a federal grand jury in Denver on March 16, 2017. She pled guilty to the indictment as charged without a plea agreement on April 28, 2017. She was sentenced by Judge Moore today, August 22, 2017.

According to the Factual Basis for Change of Plea stipulated by both parties, Boyle was an employee of the U.S. Postal Service. In the summer of 2015, after she was not selected for a promotion, Boyle decided to take some time off work by pretending to have cancer. She communicated to her supervisor that she was recently diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. She then began taking substantial amounts of sick leave, despite the fact that Boyle did not have non-Hodgkins lymphoma, nor did she have any other sort of cancer or serious illness that necessitated the sick leave she was taking.

Boyle continued the ruse until she was caught following an interviewed by an agent of the Postal Service’s Office of the Inspector General on February 28, 2017. In the approximately twenty months that Boyle’s fraud lasted, she used her non-existent cancer treatment to support both unwarranted sick leave and unwarranted accommodations allowing her to work part-time or work from home. Boyle was to continue this fraud until her scheduled retirement in April 2017. Despite claiming that cancer treatment had made her too sick to work or come to the office, she was planning a post-retirement cruise to Hawaii.

During the course of the investigation it was determined that Boyle e-mailed her supervisor notes from two different doctors indicating that she was receiving cancer treatment. However, the notes were created by Boyle as she was not a patient of either doctor.

Additional evidence at sentencing showed that, prior to faking cancer herself, Boyle had falsely accused a subordinate of faking cancer and denied her certain accommodations which that employee had requested due to her sickness. In contrast, Boyle was often granted paid administrative leave (not charged to her sick leave balance) and allowed to work from home up to five days a week based on her fraudulent illness.

Executive Special Agent in Charge Scott Pierce said, “The American public trusts that U.S. Postal Service employees will obey the law. When an employee of the Postal Service violates that trust, the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General (USPS OIG) thoroughly investigates those matters. This type of behavior within the Postal Service is not tolerated and the overwhelming majority of Postal Service employees, which serve the public, are honest, hardworking, and trustworthy individuals who would never consider engaging in any type of criminal behavior. The USPS OIG and U.S. Attorney’s Office remain committed to holding accountable anyone responsible for such violations.”

This case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General. The case was prosecuted by Special Assistant United States Attorney Dan Burrows.

According to USPS records Boyle was a Purchasing and Supply Management employee with an estimated annual salary of $126, 381.

  1. Please take her pension! I am a cancer survivor and anyone who fakes this stuff should go to jail and lose everything.

  2. As a 23yr postal clerk this story applauded me. I took care and watched my mother die of breast cancer. Auntie died same year of breast cancer. Son had Hopkins disease at age 14. Watched him suffer after chemo treatments. She need jail time or made to care for a cancer patient. In so angry right now gotta stop typing cause I wanna call her ungodly names. The nerve of this b@$!!

  3. Absolutely typical of these rats! deny a deserving employee their benefits while taking advantage of the system to screw the postal service and fatten their wallets with underserved bonuses and benefits, and then blame the craft employees for the P.O.,s financial woes. its time for a total investigation of this DIS-organization!

  4. Greedy piece of trash already is set with a pension of over $100,000/year comes up with this scam because she didn’t get a promotion to spike her high 3 before she retires should be doing jail time.

  5. This **** must not be in good enough with the corrupt good ‘ol boy network of postal mgmt. where nepotism, friends, asses you’ve kissed, etc. get you jobs, not qualifications.

Otherwise instead of being in trouble, she’d be promoted which is the usual postal mgmt. way of doing things.

But she got ratted out instead.

These clowns couldn’t run a lemonade stand.

  6. This idiot manager was making $126,000 a year, but couldn’t spell the doctor’s name right she was using for the scam…can’t make this crap up!!!

Special place in hell for someone who fakes they have cancer…but the Postal Service is eaten up with these types of psycho managers.

  7. This isn’t the first time I’ve heard of or read about people faking cancer for various reasons. Some do it for skipping work, like this horrible monster did. Others are desperate for attention and sympathy. Whatever the excuse, this kind of behavior is one of the most vulgar, disgusting things a person can do. There are types who make a living going from town to town after a bad storm has gone through, with price gouging for daily necessities, phony insurance, fake roofing companies who take advances and never show up, etc. I can’t comprehend how repulsive and fucking cruel people who do this kind of stuff are.
I’m glad part of this sentence involves community service at cancer treatment facilities and hospices. I hope when she does show up families who are suffering so terribly are told about her faking cancer to rip off the USPS. Whatever they do to her she deserves. I won’t wish cancer on her, as I don’t wish it on anybody anytime. I do however hope she is treated by people who know her and what she did the way she should be. Nothing short of a total loss of all friends, contempt of her community, and shame that is overwhelming is just desserts. That is, if she has a conscience, which I seriously doubt.
Boyle may however be in for a horrifying time as she has to work among people in their last days in heartbreaking conditions. She may have to visit children who are stricken, and what’s sadder than that? Whatever mental grief she suffers she has coming to her.
My wife and I are not wealthy. I just retired recently and she is disabled. We get along okay, and our bills get paid, but even though money has to be carefully managed, we give a monthly contribution to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. It isn’t as much as I wish I could give, and the other charity we give to is the ASPCA. We hate seeing anybody suffer, especially those kids. Not to mention their parents and family. Same goes to our animal friends. Our dog is 14, and moves like a dog half her age, and our cat is 13 and is in good health but is, true to being a cat, a fur covered sand bag most of the time. But they are full members of the family, and we love all animals. Why can’t terrible miscreants like this woman and others like her act decent instead of doing such deplorable stuff like this?

      • You’re welcome, Dan. My wife and I, and our families on both sides actually love animals as much or more than most people we know. There is no reason why I shouldn’t love my ol’ tom cat Toasty and our chihuahua/Corgi mix with all my heart, as they are as gentle and loving and protective as they know how to be. Just like lots of other critters out there, they show much more class and decency than this incredibly evil bitch and millions of wretched assholes who are just rotten people who make our jobs and lives that much more stressful. Sorry to be so negative, but haven’t we had to suffer with more than our fair share of people like her lately?

    • That suspicion that this monster’s immediate boss or bosses may have helped her carry out this embezzlement and under the most low down mean spirited manner is certainly not without merit. This woman as several have pointed out was getting twice as much as most carriers were who were topped out. And if she was this horrible, willing to fake cancer to steal unwarranted sick leave, it is probable she was a very piss poor person to have to work with. I would have a very hard time accepting that somebody who was so unconscionable was otherwise a “nice” person. In my 32+ years before retiring, anybody who pulled any kind of stunt albeit not as bad as this was invariably a liar, two faced, obnoxious and repulsive or some combination of the above. I can’t imagine what the reaction was from postal employees reading this who have had, do have, or somebody in their family is battling such a horrible disease. Of course I know it would be a shocking thing to learn, but until we have been in the shoes of somebody in that kind of situation where a loved one or close friend is fighting or has lost their battles to cancer, the anger would be something we’d have to experience, and I hope for all decent people, and NOT this bitch that they never have to deal with it. My mother was a life long chain smoker, and had cancer all over her – it was due to her own bad habits as the disease isn’t very prevalent on either side of my family tree, thankfully, but I have lost a good friend to it not too long ago, and for this woman to pull such a terrible stunt just shows how vile and disgusting some people can be.

  8. Looks like her superior was in on the scam if she was given paid administrative leave.

  9. this low IQ, no college education, gutter rat making $126,381 is the real criminal act! now you know why they have lost over $120 Billion since 2009!

  10. she is typical po mismanagement scum…not atypical! these po mismanagement rats sense that the end is near and are stealing everything that is not nailed down……then its IOD like Muffin Mehgan. ALL of them belong in jail.
