Update: Police notified USPS that contract driver may be targeting other postal employees
GREENSBORO Police notified local U.S. Postal Service officials early Monday that Menice Montell Smith had targeted an employee in Greensboro and might be targeting other post office employees.
“The first incident we were made aware of was at a post office,” said Susan Danielsen, referring to Deborah Huffines, 53, (text amended to reflect correction 3/25/14) who police say Smith attacked with a crowbar. “Based on the viciousness of the attack, we posted extra patrols at post offices and notified the postmaster general.”
Police had a description from Huffines of the man who attacked her. Danielsen said Huffines told police she recognized Smith in a 911 call.
Huffines remains in stable condition at Moses Cone Hospital. Danielsen said she will require multiple surgeries.
Police put the additional patrols in the post offices where Smith, a contracted delivery driver, delivered bulk mail. Danielsen said the postmaster general also got word out to employees to be on the lookout for Smith.
Police notified U.S. Postal Service about Smith following crowbar attack
The media seems to have overlooked that the woman beaten to death by a postal contract driver is listed as a postal worker (Bulk Mail Clerk) . The other female postal worker (Mail Processing Clerk) who was assaulted with a crowbar is listed in stable condition.
Postal Worker Deborah Kay Huffine, 52, who was assaulted with a crowbar, is being treated at Moses Cone Hospital where shes in stable condition.
Jamie Lynn Goode, 36, was fatally shot in her home.
Postal Worker Michaela Dionne Brewington, 46, also was found beaten to death in her home.
Smith, 41, took his own life before he could be apprehended by police.
What incited the violence wasnt known. Or a reason for the timing. Or even the order in which the crimes were committed Monday.
